Vtape and 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival enthusiastically present God Play, an exhibition of this yearâs éminences grises, Tanya Mars and Andrew James Paterson. Bringing together video and performance works from 1987 to present, the exhibition embraces the melodramatic mayhem of two artists who have consistently explored tropes of popular culture and the underlying motivations within them.
Tanya Mars is a feminist performance artist who has been actively involved in the Canadian art scene since 1973, doing many different things. Since the â70s Marsâ work has focused on creating spectacular feminist imagery that places women at the centre of the narrative. Since the mid-â90s her performances have included endurance, durational and site-specific strategies. Her work is political, satirical and humorous. She has worked both independently and collaboratively to create both large-scale as well as intimate performances in Canada and internationally. Ironic to Iconic: The Performance Works of Tanya Mars was published in 2008 by FADO, edited by Paul Couillard. She is the recipient of a 2008 Governor Generalâs Award in Visual and Media Arts. Recently retired from teaching at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Mars lives off-grid in Nova Scotia.
Andrew James Paterson is an interdisciplinary artist living in Toronto, Ontario. His work engages in a playful questioning of language, philosophy, community and capitalism in a wide range of disciplines, including video, performance, writing, film, and music. Now a senior artist, Paterson has contributed to artist-run discourse for nearly four decadesâserving on the boards of Trinity Square Video, A Space, and YYZ Artistsâ Outlet. He has curated media arts and other programs for these organizations, as well as Cinematheque Ontario, Mercer Union, Images Festival, Pleasure Dome, and Available Light in Ottawa. He has edited and co-edited books for YYZâs publishing program, and contributed to anthologies published by Gallery TPW and to periodicals such as FILE, IMPULSE, FUSE, and Borderlines. His media-arts works have shown locally, nationally, and internationally over three and a half decades. In 2019, Paterson received a Governor Generalâs Award for his work in Visual and Media Arts.

Voices are raised, loud and striking. This biennial assembles and unites around resurgence, like groundwater that comes to the surface as a life-giving source from which to drink, despite the dark paths, present and past, of colonialism. The guardian sirens of the rivers spit out our murky waters with oxygen. We are summoned to multiple voices. Some that shake us, others that rally us in mythical basements, with a historical look at the very concept of community. Still others cross us from different worlds, memories and knowledge, like those of spirits and the dead.

Notes from Isolation: A Logbook of Thoughts and ‘momentum’ Conversations in Times of Plagues
By Andrea Pagnes
Now available through Live Art Development Agency / Unbound
Performance-making is a mode of enquiring about culture and a strategy to respond to societal emergencies. Collective acts of thought and expression are an existential urgency as they broaden our understanding of who we are. As the world grappled with lockdowns, fear has permeated our very beings. Notes from Isolation embodies an investigative journey wherein Andrea Pagnesâwho, with Verena Stenke, forms the artist duo VestAndPageâexplores the essence of existence during the COVID-19 pandemic. He then shares his notes in distant encounters with artists, poets and philosophers friends who navigate the non-linear realms: Marilyn Arsem, Lois Keidan, Joseph Morgan Schofield, Franko B, Guillermo GĂłmez-Peña, Stelarc, Timothy Morton, Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, and eventually Ron Atheyrevisiting a conversation they had a while ago. At last, performance matters: politics and science to dissect, recurring patterns of suffering and pain to surpass, religion, colonialism, and gender fluidity found a voice within the societal crises that COVID-19 accentuated. Multiple remote visions and divergent creative thinking are pooled to inspect reality while caring for humanity, as to perhaps find a way out.
“Andreaâs thought chronicles and dialogues with friends delve into the intricacies and diverse experiences of displacement, cultural questioning, and tradition. They wave from presence to absence, ponder what it means to be alive, move fluidly between performance and introspection, and populate the metaphysical space this book represents, crafting a love letter to those who dwell between corporeal and spiritual conditions.” ~Chinasa Vivian Ezugha
