  1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS OFFTA 2025
    DEADLINE DATE MAY 5, 2024
    LOCATION MONTREAL, CANADA
    SOURCE OFFTA

The OFFTA, an annual artistic event presented on the fringes of the Festival TransAmériques (FTA), allows artists to share performances that shift the perspectives of festivalgoers and explore new artistic practices. The supported projects question, transform, and resist preconceptions. OFFTA provides a platform for emerging artists to unfold their pluralities and contribute to the renewal of established models.

NEW APPROACH
With the aim of providing extended support to artists until their presentation at OFFTA 2025, OFFTA has shifted earlier the dates of its call for projects. The 19th edition of the festival will take place from May 23rd to June 1st 2025.

LA SERRE – arts vivants, the producer of OFFTA, aims to reaffirm its role in supporting emerging practices by offering a set of resources to artists presented at OFFTA, creating more connections between its various programs. The proposed activities will be held in collaboration with the projects supported through the Radial Residencies and YOU ARE HERE programs of LA SERRE. In addition to the projects selected through this call, the OFFTA 2025 will present projects curated in collaboration with LA SERRE and its partners.

Hazel Meyer
The Marble in the Basement

Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond BC
Exhibition: April 20–June 30, 2024

What gets stored in a shoebox? Deposited into an archive? Shoved into a corner? Catalogued as important? Fever pitched towards a garbage can? Centered on a pile of marble scraps that possibly once belonged to iconic Canadian artist and experimental filmmaker Joyce Wieland, local artist Hazel Meyer’s The Marble in the Basement untangles issues of power, memory, and inheritance by anthropomorphizing a forgotten object from this influential Canadian artist’s domestic archive.

The Marble in the Basement looks to the legacy of Joyce Wieland to work across questions of inheritance, while asking how a notable and supported figure like Wieland, can nonetheless direct us to lesser-supported histories of art, land, representation, and care.

Hazel Meyer is an artist who works with installation, performance, and text to investigate the relationships between sexuality, feminism, and material culture. Her work recovers the queer aesthetics, politics, and bodies often effaced within histories of infrastructure, athletics, and illness.

The Marble in the Basement: Performances by Hazel Meyer
May 9, 10 & 12, 2024
Sliding scale $5–$15 / Registration required

Hazel Meyer and her cast of two other performers and a bug-eyed puppet called Marble act out The Marble in the Basement, a site-specific performance that uses her installation of the same name as a set. The marble found posthumously in Canadian artist Joyce Wieland’s home becomes a point of departure to think about “inheritance, class, queerness…and what you pass on.”

Retrace. Appear. Transcend.

On behalf of this ectoplasmic and spectral 18th edition, we are ecstatic to invite you once again on a dive into the intoxicating world of the OFFTA.

Transcending the boundaries of what is tangible, we find ourselves somewhere beyond materiality, straddling territories at the threshold of consciousness. The artists, alchemists of our own preconceptions, reshape what is certain. They deviate from ambiguity, they skip over detours, and they flip imbalances inside out.

As our world is being torn apart by questions of belonging, this edition invites us to reinvest in ideas of possession and lineage–be them material, cultural, sociopolitical, or mystical. Whether by chewing on slugs of identity, immersing ourselves in unsettling waters to reach those who have passed on, or facing chimeras deep in debt: the voices of the artists – both crystal clear and mysterious–call us to their realms.

This edition’s program stems from a curatorial process bringing together the ten hands of Nindy Banks, DADA, arkadi lavoie lachapelle, Baco Lepage-Acosta, Michael Martini, and Claudel Doucet.

WALKING LOVE by AK mimi Allin

Starts: 12 April 2024 (Lordsburg, New Mexico USA)
Closes: 26 December 2027 (Durham, Maine)

WALKING LOVE is an artwork by nomadic poet and performance artist A K Mimi Allin—17,000 miles cross country, in a path that spells l-o-v-e in cursive letters across the USA. The work begins this April in New Mexico and travels north to Montana, then west to Washington, then south to California. The following year, the artist will walk the “O,” then the “V,” finishing in the winter of 2027 in Maine (following the red line on her map). WALKING LOVE is about facing fears and the darker aspects of what it means to be an American. In solidarity with the refugees in Gaza, the artist will undertake segments of this walk with nothing—no money, no pack, no sleeping bag. Consider supporting this work in exchange for a love letter from the path or a silkscreen handkerchief showing the artist’s route. Thank you.

UNRWA is a UN agency that provides medical support, trauma relief & food assistance to Palestinians. To support the refugees in Palestine, please consider donating to the Walking Love Gaza Relief Fund.
