    DATE AVAILABLE NOW
    LOCATION THE WORLD
    SOURCE EMILY DICARLO

we imitate sleep to dream of dissent is a printed project that brings together ten artists to explore slowness as praxis through an expanded performance art lens.

Guided by five Fluxus-inspired prompts, dreamer-participants Jacqui Arntfield, Ellen Bleiwas, Simon Fuh, Chris Mendoza, Dana Prieto, Matt Nish-Lapidus, Mehrnaz Rohbakhsh, St Marie φ Walker (Denise St Marie and Timothy Walker, along with the project’s creator, Emily DiCarlo, engaged at their own pace with short readings, various media and creative exercises to investigate rest as a radical gesture in a grinding, non-stop 24/7 world.

An open invitation to future readers, the performance prompts function as an alternative embodied approach to traditional research, encouraging participants to trust their intuition and lean into play—to experiment with the ephemeral and dream of alternatives to our current temporal predicament.

One-part performance document and one-part field guide, this textual iteration of we imitate sleep to dream of dissent presents each participant’s findings as an example for creative experimentation and a map for future self-practice.

REFRACTIONS, HOW TO ELEVEN by Nadège Grebmeier Forget
July 7, 2023

As part of the public engagement project I WILL NEVER FINISH REMOVING ALL THESE FACES. (GUIDED REFLECTION), Nadège Grebmeier Forget will present a performance, titled REFRACTIONS, HOW TO ELEVEN.

The performance will be presented within the installation conceived by the artist. Traces generated by the performance will be visible to the public during the last two days of the project’s presentation. Though it is not usually regarded as participative or interactive, Grebmeier Forget’s practice is based on different mediations of the self via the image, operated through the mediums of performance or installation. Through mirrors, visual echoes, and constant passages between analogue and digital realms, the artist explores the meanderings of self-representation, proposing that it is an inescapable contemporary phenomenon, both aesthetically and psychically. If Grebmeier Forget tends to place herself at the center of her works, acting as both subject and object, this public engagement project is an opportunity for the artist to open up her approach to different spectatorial postures that also oscillate between action and observation, between the unique and the replicated image, or between abstraction and figuration.

• Have diverse arts skills & practices, and are excited about multiple disciplines coming together through performance, gesture, amplification, projection and more!;
• Have strong communication & listening skills, and a keen interest in consensus building & deep collaboration;
• Have a sense of how this learning would benefit your existing arts practice.

Calling all racialized and diasporic artists! SAVAC (South Asian Visual Art Centre) wants to know about the artists, activists, and writers from the Global South and its diasporas whose works greatly influenced your own thinking and making. Who are the creative predecessors that made you feel seen and validated? Tell us about the subversive, political, and genre-bending artists whose practices are largely overlooked from art history canons, forgotten to time, or otherwise plucked from context.

Fan Out! will be hosted as a series of free, public gatherings between September–November 2023, both in-person and over zoom. Selected artists will be invited to officially fan out about their chosen person by giving a 10-15 minute “passion presentation” and contributing to a fanzine. Much collective fan-girling among presenters and audiences is sure to follow.

The submission form will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Racialized artists living anywhere are encouraged to apply. Each presenter will be paid a CARFAC fee of CAD $350. Deadline: July 15, 2023.

PAErsche Aktionslabor invites you to Transition – Between Apocalypse and Utopia. How do people locate themselves in the network of nature? The international performance artists Gustaf Broms, Rubiane Maia, Ralf Peters, Volodymyr Topiy and Gülhatun Yıldırım are dedicated to the elements along the Rhine: earth, water, fire, air and ether as natural phenomena and explore the dependencies and correspondences of these forces. The instability of these elements in the Anthropocene is also evident in Germany through floods, air pollution, drought and forest fires. The situation also leads to a lot of controversy in politics with the question of how we as a society and as individuals will deal with the future challenges of climate change.

The artistic contributions move in the field of tension of these processes and refer to the theory of the elements, which in many ancient cultures served as a way of orienting people in the world and emphasized growth, change and decay in all living processes. This project, which brings together artists from different backgrounds, bundles synergies in order to examine the interrelationships of natural forces in their entire potential and to move them into the center of the action.
