  1. FADO PRESENTS AN EVENING WITH DENYS BLACKER
    DATE SEPTEMBER 7, 2023
    LOCATION TORONTO, CANADA
    SOURCE FADO

Join us for an evening with Denys Blacker in which she presents a new performance. Blacker performs in Toronto before heading to the VIVA! Art Action main stage. VIVA! takes place from September 11–17, 2023 and FADO is happy to be collaborating with them on programming once again.

FADO is thrilled to host Deny Blacker in Toronto. She is a visual artist whose practice spans performance art, drawing, sculpture and video. In 2002, she co-founded Gresol, a non-profit cultural association and has organized over 20 international Performance art festivals in Girona and Barcelona. Of note is FEM, an annual festival showcasing the work of women performance artists which is now in its 16th edition. She is a founding member of the all-women performance group Ocells al Cap (Birds in the Head) and a member of the International performance group Wolf in the Winter. She is co-founder of the EU funded project ELAA (European Live Art Archive) based in the University of Girona.

Blacker’s interest lies in the way we intercommunicate and how we develop our individual and communal capacity for adaptability and contingency. Contingency can be understood literally as the absence of certainty in events, but it can also mean, forming part of a larger group. It is in this connection to the larger group, where Blacker explores the artistic, social and political implications of engaging with embodied, intuitive and visceral ways of knowing. Her investigation has led her to explore the boundaries between subject and object and between self and other, to reveal how we might communicate in ways that go beyond the cognitive senses, including the possibilities of telepathy and precognition.

While in Toronto, Denys will also be hosting a special workshop for female-identified performance artists. Stay tuned for details to be announced in September.

The FADO website, created by the unique minds at I Know You Know, is guided by colour and scent.

The navigation menu contains the various categories by which FADO presents our work. The menu on the left side of your browser, where you see “about,” “performance,” “series,” “engagements,” and so on, highlights these areas. Each of the categories is color-coded and contains a description of a unique fragrance. The scent illuminates the qualities of the various ways FADO works. You can read the description of the categories/colours/scents in the footer of each web page. The notes of each scent (top, middle, and base) conjure the elements, memories, and characteristics of our performances, artists, engagements, writing, bulletin, and the archive.

The fragrances are conceptual and actual. Some remain on the website as a description, in the form of a digital scratch n’ sniff that you can read and imagine for yourself.

Some are formulated and are for smelling. In real life. The second scent in the series that you can experience for yourself is ENGAGEMENT PINK. Subscribe to the FADO email list and include your mailing address and FADO will send you an ENGAGEMENT PINK scented postcard. For a limited time, if you live in Canada, we will also include a special surprise. If you are already on our mailing list, you can update your profile with your mailing address. DO THAT HERE, and your ENGAGEMENT PINK-scented postcard will be on its way.

  1. PERFORMANCE 1S1 THEATRE PRESENTS LADY M (MARGARET)
    DATE AUGUST 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12, 2023
    LOCATION TORONTO, CANADA
    SOURCE SUMMERWORKS

Lady M (Margaret) is a new, Deaf-led adaptation of Macbeth that explores Shakespeare’s famous power couple with an intersectional experience for both Deaf and hearing audiences. Adapted, created and directed by internationally-renowned, Scotland-based theatre maker Ramesh Meyyappan, this world premiere performance work is the inaugural production by 1s1 Theatre featuring Dawn Jani Birley and Sturla AlvsvĂ„g in the title roles.

“Deaf-led projects by culturally and linguistically Deaf professional artists are so rare in Canada. In order to build authentic bridges of intercultural exchanges between Deaf and hearing communities, it is vital for Deaf artists to have a say – or be empowered and supported in telling our own stories – rather than being portrayed in ways we have been systemically perceived.” ~Dawn Jani Birley, Performer in Lady M (Margaret)

There is a 20-minute post-show talkback on August 8th, featuring Director, Ramesh Meyyappan, and Performers, Dawn Jani Birley, Sturla AlvsvÄg, and Joshua Bosworth.

  1. EVENT LEGS RIMOUSKI
    DATE AUGUST 19, 2023
    LOCATION RIMOUSKI, CANADA
    SOURCE CHRISTIAN BUJOLD

LEGS is a series of relay performance events initiated by the performance art community in Montreal in 2015 and is characterized by a questioning of curatorial and institutional financial models to allow for greater freedom of action and deployment. The initiators of LEGS wanted to create a horizontal, independent and flexible performance event open to everyone, regardless of level of experience and artistic approach. 51 participants in 2015 es relayed for about 9 straight hours for performances of about 10 minutes uninterrupted. In order to be consistent with the founding principles, a “LEGS participation” has been created so that anyone who has already participated can initiate their own LEGS. To date, LEGS listed events in Montreal, Toronto, Basel, Giswil, Zurich, Olten and Chicoutimi.

LEGS RIMOUSKI will take place on August 19, at the Caravansérail Center in Roumouski, Quebec. LEGS, ROUMOUSKI is (non)organized by Christian Bujold, one of the founding artists of the first Legs, and frequent Legs participant. Check the website for details!
