1. Fado presents Gusztav Uto
Performance, video screening and talk, September 9, 2003
VISA TRAUMA -- Gusztav Uto
September 9, 2003, 7:30 pm
presented in collaboration with BLANK SLATE
Implant
58 Wade Ave, Unit 12
PWYC
TORONTO, Canada ... Fado, working in collaboration with Blank Slate, is pleased to present a performance, video screening and talk by Gusztav Uto, one of Romania's foremost performance artists. This will be the final work in VISA TRAUMA, a series of four actions undertaken by the artist during his visit to Canada (previous actions in Chicoutimi, Montreal and Quebec City, August 2003).
Gusztav Uto presents performance actions combining political and poetic impulses that respond to current and local situations. VISA TRAUMA comes out of the circumstances under which Uto finds himself in Canada. Originally invited to perform as part of SYLVA, a collective of Transylvanian artists formed for this tour, Uto found himself alone after his 5 companions were denied visas by the Canadian embassy in Bucharest. Consequently, these performances speak to this unexpected absence of his colleagues and of the difficulties of communicating across cultural, geographic and administrative borders.
After his performance, Uto will show some video documentation of the ANNART festival in Romania and engage in a discussion with the audience about how art is valued in Romania vs Canada.
This event is presented in collaboration with BLANK SLATE, a new Toronto forum for discussions, critical talks, conferences, workshops and interdisciplinary events blending together science, technology philosophy, politics and art. Fado wishes to acknowledge Le Lieu (Quebec) and Richard Martel for arranging Gusztav Uto's visit to Canada.
About Gusztav Uto
Gusztav Uto is a performance artist who has been making performance actions for many years, presenting his work throughout Europe, Asia and North America. He appeared in Toronto in 1996 as part of Fado's Rencontre Performance festival (in collaboration with Le Lieu). An artist of Hungarian background, he lives in Transylvania (Romania). Uto also worked throughout the 1990s as the organizer of the ANNART festival, an international outdoor performance art festival around a volcanic lake. During this period it was considered one of the most important performance meeting places in Eastern Europe, but lack of funds has made it impossible to produce the festival in recent years.

2. Fado update
We launch into a busy fall season, beginning with a special guest appearance by Romanian artist Gusztaf Uto. Performance Art Curator Paul Couillard invited Uto to perform after discovering that Uto would be spending a week in Toronto in early September. The two were in contact in August while both were performing at the TraficART Festival in Chicoutimi, Quebec, presented by Séquence Arts Visuels et Médiatiques .
Following this special added presentation, Fado's regualr fall programming begins September 18 -21 with FIVE HOLES: reminiSCENT series. Co-curated by Jim Drobnick and Paul Couillard, the series will feature performances based on smell by Millie Chen and Evelyn Von Michalofski, Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan, Cheli Nighttraveller, Helen Paris and Leslie Hill (with guest artist Lois Weaver), and Clara Ursitti. An email with details will be sent out soon, but in the meantime, you can find information about the project on our webstie. Other fall events include Irma Optimist and Pekka Luhta from Finland, who will be presented in Toronto at the TRANZ < - - - > TECH Festival and in Hamilton at the Art Gallery of Hamilton as part of sevenseason (October), as well as Boris Nieslony from Germany (November).
Pessi Parviainen from the Turku Art Academy, in Turku, Finland arrived in early August, and has been digitizing Fado's archives. Expect to see a great deal of archival information, much of it visual, appear on the website in the next few months. Pessi will also be providing technical support for upcoming Fado events until his departure in November.

4. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "EXUF" exURBAN FESTIVAL 2004 (Croatia)
Deadline September 15, 2003; Source: BLOK
Local Base for Culture Refreshment [BLOK]
Zagreb, Croatia
EXUF is a project with basic tendency to infiltrate art into urban life and intensify communication between inhabitants with their city and its infrastructure.
One of the results of industrialisation process and increasing urbanisation is the construction of ones free time primarily as the opposition to working time. This firm and mostly unquestionable dichotomy actually hides the fact that, seen from the point of view of fluctuating capital, free time is a unique field. Especially in urban life it is quite planned, controlled and rather tradable. Considering we live in the time of production and consumption of cultural and symbolical goods free time offers the broadest space for consumerism. Who controls our free time? Who makes money on it? In which way cultural artistic field functions as a market, as a place where goods and additional values are produced? What are public spaces and in which way do they function? What about privatised public spaces?
If it became as the consequence of striving for safety and order or escaping from the unpredictable nature, the city has managed to create a paradoxical construction of free time placing it under control. Therefore we are interested in artistic works that deal with the way in which everyday life is structured, rethink free and working time relation and free time annulation, consider the relation between private and public and also specific places of production / consumption of pleasure, fun, leisure or are interested in controlling and segmenting the everyday life.
Since Urban Festival does not want to be the manifestation trading the projects offered at the world market of art and deprived of any socio-cultural context, but the means of probing Zagreb urban context / life, this year we have decided to give up on the three part festival form. It will be substituted with weekend happenings through one month of urboscopia, which refers to four weekends in May (7 9 May, 14 16 May, 21 23 May, 28 30 May). Once more we are trying to destruct classical festival form and following that have decided to change the name of this manifestation: EXUF, meaning Ex Urban Festival

6. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Nourritures (Food)" esse arts + opinions numéro 50 (Montreal)
Deadline: September 15, 2003; Source: esse arts + opinions
esse arts + opinions invites authors to submit articles for the next issue on the theme of Nourritures (Food) (number 50, to be released in December 2003).
Many social, esthetic, economic and ethical issues revolve around the idea of "food" (ie : all that physically feeds us), which we would like to see developed as much from an artistic perspective as from a social standpoint (and indeed, where the two thrusts may intersect).
As a potential influence on social conventions -- whether rooted in ancient traditions or emerging out of constantly evolving societies -- food continues to find itself at the heart of many debates. Contributing to a societal, cultural and environmental evolution, how may this eventually transform our relationship to our reality? Food as revelatory barometer of social practices, attitudes, and resistance becomes a territory where psychological behaviours become apparent (catharsis, excess, deprivation, etc.).
Whether it's a question of the redistribution of goods, recycling, scavenging or the development of micro-economies within an increasingly globalized planet (where corporate interests control almost all manner of production and marketing of the world's food supply), this feature aims to expose such diverse practices that underline the theme of "Food" Desire, preoccupation with personal representation, battling for the control of means of production, corporeal processing of goods, economic diversity, nutrition, agriculture ú all are potential areas of research, and routes for exploration.
The deadline for receiving submissions is September 15, 2003. Articles should should be between 4 and 10 sheets, for a total of 1000 - 2500 words. Send articles by email as a Word or RTF document to revue@esse.ca
Please indicate your name, postal address, email address and telephone number on the cover page of your submission.
Articles will be read and evaluated by the editorial committee of esse magazine.

8. Seeking information on Canadian interdisciplinary artists
Deadline: September 30, 2003; Source: Popstart
Three interdisciplinary art companies (Bluemouth Inc from Toronto, Vancouverís Radix Theatre and Les Productions Nathalie Derome from Montreal) met at Torontoís Free Fall Festival in October 2002. We were inspired by each otherís work and stimulated by the opportunity to meet other artists classified as ìinterdisciplinary,î and concluded that there exists a real need for a pan-Canadian interdisciplinary artistís network, in order to share ideas, approaches and information regarding our work. And so, Popstart was born.
With Popstart we wish to start a swell of popular support for interdisciplinary art. It is necessary and urgent for artists to organize themselves and to exchange information regarding their artistic practice, as well as the problems and challenges of production and dissemination of interdisciplinary creation, which resemble each other from one end of the country to the other. We dream that this too big country of ours finally becomes navigable for interdisciplinary creation.
Thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, we are building a website. In it, we would like to include as many interdisciplinary artists, production companies and artist-run-centres interested in this sector, as possible. We invite you to become a part of our network, and to have the opportunity to promote your work on the Popstart website.
Each organization or individual will have one page and the possibility of a link to their own website, if one exists. If you are interested in participating, we ask that you please send us one photograph to represent you as well as a one-page summary of your work and/or that of your organization ñ in both English and French if possible. Unfortunately, we cannot afford the costs of translation, and prefer to leave you the delicate task of translating your text, in order to ensure its integrity. We ask that you send us this material by September 30th, 2003. Please also do not hesitate to pass this call for submissions along to other artists, who may not be included in our mailing list.
You can contact me for any further information regarding the Pop Start project, by e-mail or by phone. My home base is in Montreal at Les Productions Nathalie Derome. I look forward to hearing from you.

12. "Walking Woman 2003" (Vancouver & Richmond, BC)
September 20, 2003; Source: Margaret Dragu
Walking Woman is a
parade + tour + fitness + ecological
+ all day audience-participatory
art event
Walking Woman is a rain-or-shine Walk'n'Roll event that is fun for everyone. If you can walk -- or even if you can roll -- with a baby stroller or wheelchair - you can have fun in the Walking Woman event.
Walking Woman is inspired by the work of Canada's most famous artist Michael Snow who created over 200 works using the silhouetted image of the Walking Woman, in two and three dimensions, culminating in 11 stainless steel sculptures for Expo 67.
Walking Woman is a unique tour created and lead by international performance artist Margaret Dragu who shares her fave Richmond spots. Walking Woman is a celebration of urban, suburban & commuter experiences from the perspective of the citizen on foot and with public transportation.
Before the event, be sure to pre-register via email to mdragu@city.richmond.bc.ca. Space is limited!
