2. Fado CALL FOR PROPOSALS: FIVE HOLES: LISTEN! (Toronto)
   Deadline: January 16, 2004

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: FIVE HOLES: LISTEN!

FIVE HOLES is an ongoing series examining the significance of the body and the senses. Fado invites artists to submit proposals for LISTEN!, the fourth installment in the series. We seek site-specific performance art projects that focus on the sense of hearing. Approximately seven proposals will be selected for an event to be held in the summer of 2004 in Toronto.

FIVE HOLES: LISTEN! will feature site-specific performance art projects that focus on the act of listening as a way to "place" oneself. This implies a privileging of the audience's experience -- how sound reveals the relationship between one's body and its surroundings -- over the performer's expressive use of sound.

In our culture, sound is most appreciated for its expressivity. Disciplines rooted in sound -- music and spoken language -- place an enormous focus on this particular quality, developing and presenting structures that explore or exploit sound's emotive and expressive nature. But sound as a sense also allows us to place ourselves in an environment. Many animals use sonar, for example, as a positioning mechanism. Inner ear problems can lead not only to hearing loss, but also to vertigo.

Bearing in mind that the FIVE HOLES series focuses on the nature and importance of our bodies (performer and audience) in performance art, the title of this installment recognizes "listening" as a loaded physical act. The term is often used as a powerful metaphor for an active process of seeking spiritual attunement, or for taking stock of one's place in the world. Pauline Oliveros writes, "Listening is noticing and directing attention and interpreting what is heard ... noticing and directing the interaction and relationships of sounds and modes of attention. We hear in order to listen. We listen in order to interpret ourselves and our world and to experience meaning." Curator Paul Couillard is particularly interested in projects that take an adventurous, innovative approach to the act of listening.

Please include 1-page proposal, c.v., and documentation of previous work [slides, NTSC video, CD-ROMs, URLs, etc.]. Press material optional. Only submissions with self-addressed stamped envelope or sufficient funds to cover shipping and packaging will be returned.

Deadline: January 16, 2004

The centre accepts proposals from artists, collectives and community associations concerned with the research brought forth with the Dis/location.

Your submission should include:
A brief text (approx. 250 words) describing your projet, a résumé, a text on your artistic practice, ten slides (numbered) with a descriptive list, audio/video tape (ntsc), DVD, CD-Rom, and any other document essential to the comprehension of your proposal, a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the return of your documentation. The centre does not accept submissions by email or fax.

Mandate:

DARE-DARE is leaving its premises. The centre's office will move to a temporary shelter in Montréal, located on a vacant space or in an area with potential for unusual occupancy. A Dis/location is taking place.

The annual programming will revolve around the connexion between urbanity and artistic practice, between artists and citizens of a multi-levelled city.

5. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE Artist-in-Residence Programme (Quebec)
Deadline: February 27, 2004; Source: LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE

For Fall 2004 and Winter-Spring 2005

LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE is an artist-run centre devoted to experimentation with installations and in situ practices in visual arts. Its artist-in-residence programme offers not only a working and living space for artists, but also a space in which to experiment with the creative process. In our view a residency is an occasion for an artist to question the nature of the artistic process itself with regard to its development and its reception. It is a laboratory where artists are invited to work within the space of the gallery itself or beyond its walls.

LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE is particularly interested in work that, in the manner of works in progress, use time as a medium. Submitted projects must integrate installation and in situ practices. During the residency, the selected artist will be invited to create a unique and ephemeral piece, in the context of a true in vivo laboratory. The public will thus be invited to follow the creative process of each residency project.

The centre offers

• an in situ residency of six weeks
• lodging at LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE
• $ 1750 (CAN) artist fees
• technical assistance
• half of the transportation cost
• acces to a woodworking shop and a computer lab
• an essay in LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE’s publication.

The proposal must include

• a written description of the project proposed
• a resume (C.V.)
• an artist’s statement
• a portfolio of the artist’s work (slides, CD-ROMs, videos, etc.)
• a SASE to return documents, if desired.

Send your proposal to LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE before February 27th, 2004 with the mention
“Artist-in-Residence Programme” to the following address :

7. EVENT: The Boaters' Café (Toronto)
November 21 - December 7, 2003; Source: Akimbo

En Burk & Allen Morgan
The Boaters' Café
87 Wade Ave. #305, Toronto
November 21 - December 7, 2003

En Burk and Allen Morgan will be opening their current Territory Landscape, entitled The Boaters' Café, for viewing from Nov 21 to Dec 7, 2003 at 87 Wade Ave. #305. (A Territory Landscape is a vision of the world as a harmonious, interconnected, fully-communicative place. There are infinite points of view, each one a different landscape, but the qualities of wholeness are always expressed.) This is the fourth in a series of site-specific installations at this location.

The Boaters' Café is a landscape situated between two worlds, with doorways into both. Visitors to the exhibition are given the option (recommended) to be blindfolded, and are guided down the hallway to one entrance, where the blindfold is removed. Then they can enter and experience the landscape at their leisure, moving through the space or taking a seat at one of the Café tables. Characters who commonly come and go through the other entrance, the one leading to and from the Territory, may at any time show up. The mingling of Café patrons and Territory characters creates the theatre of this place. For the next few years, The Boaters' Café will be the stage set for various plays enacted by The Territory Theatre Company. For now, though, you're welcome just to come and enjoy the atmosphere. The space is entirely lit with hanging candles. Perhaps you will be served tea. Or, if you step up to the Essence Bar, the bartender may mix you a personalized elixir. One never knows, but a visitor who enters through one door may leave through the other, into a world different from the one they knew before they arrived.

There are many in-progress pictures of The Boaters' Café on the website: <http://www.territory.org>www.territory.org  There is also an extensive archives of past Territory Landscapes.

In conjunction with the exhibition
what It feels like for a girl
3 December 2003-1 February 2004

"Over the last ten years my work has been a series of endurance-based tableau.
I created performances where I push my body to a place where my mind must take
over and become responsible for the duration of one particular action (more
often than not in stasis). For the most part I was physically exhausted but
through the power of mind over matter the body held its place, literally. I had
the idea that my mind and body were working together but there came a time when
I realized they were not. I was more uncomfortable than I let on and in truth
preferred to be. I chose to be uncomfortable. It is a certain level of comfort
that I am looking for now and in this Untitled work at York University, I
produce a number of actions where the mind and body must work together.
Responsibility for both physical and psychological states is vital to realizing
who we are and so in a sense these actions are more honest. I've come to many
realizations in the recent past about who and what I am and the actions in this
work are manifestations of this awareness. This performance is about
psychological process realized through physical actions. They are metaphors for
how I feel and perhaps in some cases what makes me feel the way I do."
Louise Liliefeldt, November 2003

Louise Liliefeldt is a performance artist and painter based in Toronto. Her
performances have been presented across Canada as well as in the U.S., Poland,
Turkey, and Wales. Liliefeldt's work is predominately concerned with the
politics of identity especially as it intersects with issues of gender and
race. Other concerns include the cultural conventions of spectatorship and
the links between expanded emotional/psychological states and physical
experience. Her work is often presented in a public setting where she installs
herself and creates environments using self made-objects and sometimes video
projections. Louise Liliefldt has worked collectively with filmmaker Midi
Onodera, video and performance artist Istvan Kantor, curator and performance
artist Paul Couillard, painter Michael Caines, and sound recordist and
performance artist W.A. Davison. She is a co-founder and collective member of
7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art and a board member of Pleasure
Dome Film and Video.

Celina Carroll has been involved in diverse musical projects for the past 15
years. She has toured extensively as a lead singer and multi-instrumentalist
and was awarded Female Performer of the Year by the Toronto African Music
Association. Celina is currently co-owner of SeeWhySound Studios and performs
with Cameroonian dance band Njacko Backo.

Toronto based artist Leslie Peters has been actively working in video, multi-
channel installation, curating exhibitions and coordinating cultural events
since 1997. Her video works have shown internationally in the UK, France,
Germany, Egypt, Spain, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Poland, and throughout North
America.

what it feels like for a girl runs from 3 December 2003 - 1 February 2004 and
will open with a reception on Wednesday, December 3rd 2003 from 6 - 9 pm at the
